SC Warns Meghalaya Over Illegal Mining in Khasi Hills

The Supreme Court has given Meghalaya a last four-week chance to file an affidavit on measures against illegal mining in Khasi Hills. The court warned that failure or unsatisfactory response could lead to summoning the Chief Secretary.
The issue arose during a plea on Guwahati’s urban flooding, allegedly linked to mining in Ri-Bhoi and Khasi Hills. While Meghalaya claimed to have replied to the Central Empowered Committee, the Amicus Curiae disputed this.
A four-member committee has also been set up to inspect stone quarries in Assam and must submit its report in four weeks. Illegal mining found during inspection must be stopped immediately by the District Mining Officer.
