Assam Health Sector Faces Severe Shortages, Says AMSA

The Assam Medical Service Association (AMSA) highlighted major issues in the state’s health sector, including shortage of doctors, technicians, medicines, and proper quarters.
Dr. Makhan Saikia, AMSA general secretary, said rural areas suffer most, forcing Gauhati Medical College Hospital to bear heavy pressure. While infrastructure like X-ray and sonography machines exist, lack of radiologists, reagents, and staff hampers services.
He added that doctors’ quarters are either absent or dilapidated, making rural postings difficult, especially for women doctors. AMSA also demanded better promotion avenues and immediate posting of a doctor as Director of Health Services (Family Planning).
