Drug Smuggling Scandal Rocks Nagaon Central Jail
A major controversy has erupted at Nagaon Central Jail after two wardens, Upen Hazarika and Biraj Patangia, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly smuggling banned drugs and ganja to inmates. The arrests followed a surprise inspection by the Nagaon District Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, which uncovered evidence of a thriving drug trade inside the prison.
The Assam Government has suspended Jail Superintendent Mukul Bhuyan with immediate effect, while a high-level inquiry has been initiated. Civil society groups have demanded strict punishment for those involved. Police have registered a case and are continuing investigations.
