AJYCP Protests Large Dams, Warns of Economic Blockade on Nov 7

The Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged State-wide sit-ins demanding a stop to large dam construction, including the Lower Subansiri hydropower project. The group said big dams threaten Assam’s rivers, ecology, and culture, and accused authorities of ignoring expert warnings.

AJYCP announced it will launch an economic blockade at Gerukamukh on November 7 if its demands are not met. The organization said the Lower Subansiri project began trial power generation without publishing the expert committee report, and demanded its release before full operation.

Leaders cited past damage from the Ranganadi project and warned the 2,000 MW Subansiri dam could cause greater disaster. They also accused the BJP of reversing its anti-dam stance after coming to power and criticized plans for multiple dams in the Northeast.
