Assam Plans Dedicated Satellite ‘ASSAMSAT’ with ISRO Support

The Assam government informed the Assembly that it has begun work with ISRO to develop ASSAMSAT, a dedicated satellite aimed at improving flood forecasting, governance, and public services.
Science & Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta said discussions have been held with ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan and Union Minister Jitendra Singh. A feasibility study and mission plan will be prepared before design and launch timelines are finalised.
Currently, Assam uses ISRO and foreign satellite data for flood monitoring, but a state-owned satellite would provide faster and more accurate information. The government has also drafted the Assam Space Tech Policy 2025 to expand satellite-based applications in agriculture, disaster management, and environmental monitoring.
