Assam Passes Bill to Set Up District Land Tribunals

The Assam Assembly has passed the Assam District Land Tribunal Bill, 2025, aimed at creating independent tribunals in tribal belts and blocks to handle land disputes, evictions and violations of protected land rights.
Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta said the move will speed up case resolution, which is currently handled by district commissioners. Initially, tribunals will be established in 11 districts and will function with civil court powers, led by retired district or additional district judges.
The bill fulfills Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and aims to protect land rights under the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886.
