Gauhati High Court Orders Strict Action Against Illegal Fishing in Kaziranga

Taking note of large-scale community fishing during Magh Bihu, the Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government and Kaziranga authorities to strictly enforce prohibitory orders to curb illegal fishing inside Kaziranga National Park.

Hearing a PIL, the court said failure to act would violate wildlife and forest laws as well as constitutional obligations. It sought details on steps taken to prevent such activities and asked the authorities to file an affidavit on enforcement measures, noting the urgent need to protect the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s fragile ecosystem.
