Lapses Alleged in Enforcing Fishing Ban at Kaziranga During Magh Bihu

The failure of the Assam government, Kaziranga National Park authorities and district administrations to prevent large-scale community fishing inside the park during Magh Bihu has raised concerns over conservation enforcement, despite clear Gauhati High Court directives banning the practice. What was once a limited traditional activity has reportedly expanded into commercial fishing, with fish sold in nearby markets.

Critics allege lax enforcement and political reluctance ahead of elections. Forest officials have called for stricter action, warning that commercial fishing violates wildlife and forest laws, while the High Court has reiterated the need to strictly enforce prohibitory orders to protect Kaziranga’s fragile ecosystem.
