Assam Cabinet Grants OBC Status to 37 Tea Tribe Communities

The Assam Cabinet on Tuesday approved OBC status for 37 tea tribe communities, which were earlier listed as sub-castes. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Social Welfare Department will soon issue a notification.

The Cabinet also decided to extend the PM SVANidhi Scheme to street vendors in census towns, rename Dr Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College as Barpeta Medical College, and expand Guwahati’s South East Water Supply Project at a cost of ₹1,367 crore.

Other decisions include declaring a holiday for Ali Aye Ligang, allotting land for Zubeen Khetra, granting land pattas to hill residents of Guwahati, and approving industrial and investment projects worth over ₹24,800 crore.
