Dibrugarh University PG Students Begin 36-Hour Hunger Strike Over Fee Hike, Minister’s Remarks

The Postgraduate Students’ Union of Dibrugarh University began a 36-hour hunger strike on Wednesday, protesting admission issues, a recent fee hike, and alleged remarks by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu that students claim disrespected the legacy of the Assam Movement.

Led by union president Asish Bhushan Gogoi and general secretary Madhurjya Bora, students staged a protest outside the university’s main gate and burned the minister’s effigy. They demanded clarification and a public apology.

The union said a promised 50% fee concession and free admission for integrated courses were later withdrawn, creating financial pressure on many students. Protesters also alleged misconduct during a visit to the minister’s residence and claimed he questioned the impact of student protests.

Students said the hunger strike will continue until their demands are addressed and the minister clarifies his statement.
