Assam Police Tightens Social Media Surveillance Ahead of April 9 Polls

With just days left for the Assembly elections, Assam Police has intensified monitoring of social media to curb fake news and inflammatory content.

A special CID cell, led by SDGP Munna Prasad Gupta, has been tracking posts since March 20, acting on multiple cases involving defamatory and misleading content. Authorities reported 100% removal of flagged content, with one FIR registered and an आरोपी arrested.

Police said most cases involve attempts to defame candidates. Platforms have been cooperating with quick takedowns following legal procedures under the IT Act and BNSS.

Officials warned that strict action will continue against any content that could disrupt law and order during the elections.
