Assam Registers Sharp Decline in Cyber Crime Cases in 2024

Assam recorded a major decline in cyber crime cases in 2024, with incidents dropping to 408 from 909 in 2023, marking a fall of over 55 per cent, according to data from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The decline comes even as cyber crime cases across India increased by around 18 per cent during the same period. Police sources attributed Assam’s improvement to regular crackdowns on cyber criminals and increased public awareness campaigns.

A total of 360 people were arrested and 285 charge-sheeted in connection with cyber crimes in the state last year. Out of the total cases, 196 involved crimes against women, while 20 cases involved children as victims.

Among Northeastern states, most reported a rise in cyber crime cases in 2024, while Assam and Tripura registered a decline.
