Fresh Push for Gauhati High Court Bench in Barak Valley; Delegation to Meet Chief Justice on July 16

The demand for a permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court in Barak Valley has gained momentum, with the Chief Justice agreeing to meet a 12-member delegation of the Bench Establishment Demand Implementation Committee on July 16.

The committee said the demand has evolved into a people’s movement across Barak Valley and South Assam, citing difficulties faced by litigants who must travel to Guwahati for High Court matters. To strengthen public support, a signature campaign has been launched across the region, targeting 15,000 signatures from each Assembly constituency before July 16.

Committee members also plan to submit a Vision Document supporting the proposal. More than 110 organisations have backed the movement, while Dima Hasao has joined the campaign for the first time. The committee views the Governor forwarding the matter to the High Court and recent Supreme Court observations as positive developments for the long-pending demand.
