Assam, Northeast Likely to Receive Normal Rainfall Despite Weaker Monsoon Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a weaker-than-normal southwest monsoon for India in 2026, with the country expected to receive 90% of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall. However, Assam and the Northeast are likely to receive normal rainfall during the June-September monsoon season.
According to the IMD, the Northeast is expected to receive rainfall between 94% and 106% of the LPA, making it one of the few regions with a favourable monsoon outlook. The forecast also indicates that parts of the Northeast may receive normal to above-normal rainfall in June, even as most parts of the country are expected to see below-normal rainfall.
The outlook offers relief for Assam and the Northeast, where agriculture and water resources heavily depend on seasonal rains.
