Assam Reports Highest Number of HIV Cases in Northeast

Guwahati: Assam has recorded the highest number of people living with HIV in the Northeast, with 33,145 cases, according to the Union Health Ministry’s 2025-26 report. The state also accounts for nearly half of all HIV-positive women in the region.

Health experts have stressed the need for stronger awareness programmes, early diagnosis, uninterrupted treatment and targeted interventions to reduce the HIV burden. Authorities continue to promote testing, prevention and anti-stigma campaigns across the state.
