Supreme Court Orders Fresh Hearing in 27 Assam Foreigner Cases

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has set aside the Gauhati High Court’s judgments declaring 27 persons as foreigners and directed the Foreigners Tribunals to hear the cases afresh. The court ruled that citizenship disputes must be decided through a fair, lawful and reasonable process while ensuring adherence to the principles of natural justice.
The apex court clarified that it had not expressed any opinion on the citizenship claims of the appellants and directed the tribunals to independently examine the evidence before delivering fresh decisions.
