Assam Power Grid Under Strain as Demand Reaches Peak

Guwahati: Assam’s power transmission network is facing increasing pressure as peak electricity demand has touched nearly 2,800 MW, leading to frequent outages despite adequate power availability. Officials said several 132 kV transmission lines, many over 30 years old, have become major bottlenecks due to aging infrastructure, overloading, and limited capacity.
The government is implementing grid upgrade projects worth over ₹4,000 crore, including an AIIB-funded initiative, to modernize the transmission network. Officials said the upgrades are expected to significantly improve power supply reliability once completed.
