Debabrata Saikia Blames Illegal Mining for Dikhow Floods

Nazira: Former MLA Debabrata Saikia has alleged that rampant illegal stone and sand mining from the Dikhow riverbed is the main reason behind the unprecedented floods in Nazira and adjoining areas. He claimed that the removal of stones disrupted the river’s natural flow, leading to severe flooding and erosion.

Saikia said he had filed a Public Interest Litigation in 2019 seeking action against illegal mining and warned of such a disaster. He alleged that the government’s failure to implement the Gauhati High Court’s directives contributed to the present flood crisis.
