CM Himanta Rules Out Mining as Main Cause of Upper Assam Floods

Sivasagar: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said there is currently no evidence to suggest that mining was the primary cause of the recent devastating floods in Upper Assam. He attributed the flooding mainly to heavy runoff from the hills of neighbouring states and said the government is exploring better drainage solutions.

During his visit to flood-affected areas in Sivasagar and Charaideo, Sarma acknowledged concerns over mining but noted that most mining activities take place in Nagaland, outside Assam’s jurisdiction. He assured that no illegal mining would be allowed within Assam and said the government would continue assessing the damage while providing relief and working on long-term flood mitigation measures.
