Experts Question Rainfall-Only Explanation for Upper Assam Floods

Guwahati: Weather experts have questioned the Assam Government’s claim that the recent floods in Upper Assam were caused mainly by exceptionally heavy rainfall. They argue that citing rainfall as percentage excess without considering the actual rainfall received can present a misleading picture.

Experts said the floods were likely the result of multiple factors, including terrain, river behaviour, drainage conditions, landslides and human-induced environmental changes, rather than rainfall alone. They also referred to a recent disaster management study, which highlighted slope instability and ecological degradation as major contributors to the disaster.
