Supreme Court Defers Shyamkanu Mahanta Bail Plea

The Supreme Court on Monday kept Shyamkanu Mahanta’s bail plea pending and directed the Assam government to expedite the trial in the case linked to the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. The court was informed that the fast-track trial is proceeding daily, with statements of 94 out of 394 witnesses recorded as of August 14.
Mahanta’s counsel highlighted that several key witnesses based in Singapore were yet to be examined. The Assam government said their statements were expected to be recorded within the next two to three weeks. The Supreme Court urged the state to ensure speedy progress and scheduled the next hearing for October 5.
