UN Declares November 27 as International Day to End Child Marriage

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the United Nations’ declaration of November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage, saying it reinforces Assam’s ongoing campaign against the social practice. He said there is no place for child or forced marriage in society and stressed the need for strict action against those involved.
The Chief Minister highlighted Assam’s action against child marriage, stating that more than 12,000 cases have been registered and over 11,000 people arrested. He also cited an 81 per cent decline in child marriages across 20 districts, along with reductions in teenage pregnancies and improved higher-education enrolment among girls.
