Gauhati High Court Questions Demolition of Houses in Goalpara

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has questioned the demolition of several houses in Matia under Goalpara district, where residents were reportedly given only 24 hours’ notice. Justice Devashis Baruah sought an explanation from authorities on what “imminent danger” justified the action.

The court observed that the residents were not given an opportunity to present their case and directed that no further action be taken until the next hearing. The matter concerns 21 petitioners who challenged the demolition of their dwelling houses on agricultural land.
