Assam Highlights Rhino Conservation Efforts on World Rhino Day

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state minister Jayanta Malla Baruah highlighted the state’s rhinoceros conservation efforts on World Rhino Day. Sarma pointed to Assam’s contribution to global rhino conservation, stating that the state is home to around 80 per cent of the world’s greater one-horned rhino population and highlighting a record of zero rhino poaching.

Baruah described the greater one-horned rhinoceros as an important symbol of Assam’s natural heritage and reiterated the government’s focus on habitat protection and anti-poaching measures. He also referred to this year’s World Rhino Day theme, “Keep the Five Alive,” which calls for the protection of the world’s five surviving rhino species. Assam’s Kaziranga National Park remains a major stronghold of the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
