Assam to Set Up New Shipyard at Dharapur, 900 Jobs Expected

Guwahati: The Assam government has signed an MoU to establish a modern shipbuilding and repair facility at Dharapur near Guwahati along the Brahmaputra. The shipyard will connect National Waterway 2 (Brahmaputra) with National Waterway 16 (Barak), aiming to reduce cargo transportation costs and strengthen trade connectivity across the Northeast.

The project is expected to generate around 900 direct and indirect jobs, while also providing technical training opportunities for local youth. Officials said the facility will support the Act East policy and strengthen inland water transport in the region. Construction is expected to begin early next year.
