Meghalaya CM Unveils Long-Term Vision to Ease Shillong Traffic, Boost Local Businesses

Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma outlined a long-term development vision for Shillong, focusing on easing traffic congestion, expanding public spaces and improving infrastructure. He said the state secretariat is expected to shift to Umsawli by the end of 2027, allowing the existing complex to be used for road-widening, footpaths and green spaces.

Sangma also announced plans to develop the old Assembly complex into parking facilities, open spaces and areas for local entrepreneurs. Highlighting initiatives to promote home-grown products, he said successful models such as the Mawdiangdiang pavilion would be replicated at other locations. He stressed that community participation, tourism, education and entrepreneurship would remain key priorities for Meghalaya’s long-term growth.
