Hotel Bilas Inn Shooting: Ghanakanta Gogoi Sent to Judicial Custody as SIT Continues Probe

Investigators examine evidence and question the accused’s wife as the inquiry into the Guwahati hotel shooting that left five people dead moves forward.

Guwahati, November 3, 2026: The investigation into the deadly shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati has entered another crucial stage, with prime accused Ghanakanta Gogoi being remanded to judicial custody following the completion of his police interrogation period.

Gogoi was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Kamrup Metropolitan district on Tuesday, November 3, after completing seven days of police custody.

The court subsequently ordered his transfer to judicial custody as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) continued examining evidence related to the October 26 incident, which claimed five lives and left another person injured.

Police Question Accused’s Wife in Connection with Shooting

The investigation has also extended to Ghanakanta Gogoi’s wife, Junmoni Gogoi, who has been questioned by police as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to police-attributed reports, she appeared at Dhemaji Police Station on October 31, accompanied by her advocate, after investigators sought to contact her following the shooting.

She subsequently cooperated with the investigation, and the SIT questioned her in connection with the case.

Investigators have been examining documents, communications and other information that could help clarify the sequence of events before and after the fatal shooting.

There has been no confirmed announcement that Junmoni Gogoi has been arrested or charged in connection with the incident.

Police Reconstruct Events at Hotel Bilas Inn

In another important development, investigators took Ghanakanta Gogoi to Hotel Bilas Inn on November 2 to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The exercise was conducted under tight security at the hotel in Guwahati’s Bora Service area.

Police used dummy figures and a replica firearm to recreate the positions of those involved and examine how the incident may have unfolded.

The reconstruction formed part of the SIT’s efforts to compare the accused’s account with forensic findings, witness statements and evidence gathered from the scene.

Investigators have also examined the arms licence associated with the pistol allegedly used during the shooting.

Five People Killed Following Hotel Lease Dispute

The shooting occurred on the night of October 26, 2026, following an alleged disagreement involving the lease and management of Hotel Bilas Inn.

According to preliminary police findings, Ghanakanta Gogoi had entered into an agreement to operate the hotel, which belonged to the Bharali family.

Differences reportedly emerged over financial and management-related matters, prompting a meeting between the parties to discuss the dispute.

Police allege that an argument escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Gogoi opened fire.

The five people who lost their lives were identified as Bhudev Bharali, Helena Bharali, Debarshi Kashyap, Rinika Kashyap and Narayan Das.

Another person, Satyendra Pathak, sustained gunshot injuries but survived the incident.

Gogoi was apprehended shortly after the shooting, and police seized a .32-bore pistol suspected to have been used in the attack.

Special Investigation Team Continues Inquiry

Guwahati Police constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team under the leadership of Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain to conduct a detailed investigation.

The team has been examining the possible motive behind the shooting, the circumstances surrounding the hotel dispute and the sequence of events leading to the deaths.

Investigators are also reviewing forensic evidence, statements from witnesses and information obtained during questioning.

With Gogoi now in judicial custody, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the complete circumstances of the incident.

The deaths of five people, including four members of the hotel-owning family, have drawn widespread attention to the case in Assam.

Further developments are expected as investigators complete their examination of the evidence and proceed with the necessary legal formalities.

The allegations against Ghanakanta Gogoi remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
