AASU Protest Turns Violent at APDCL Office in Sivasagar Over Power Tariff Hike

Sivasagar: A statewide protest by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) against increased electricity tariffs and prepaid smart meters turned violent at the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) office in Sivasagar on Saturday, November 7. Protesters allegedly forced their way into the premises, damaging a glass entrance door. A police officer sustained injuries during a scuffle between demonstrators and security personnel.

Similar protests were held in Dibrugarh, Baksa, Lakhimpur and other parts of Assam, with AASU demanding an immediate rollback of the tariff hike. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has defended the increase as a temporary measure necessitated by rising fuel costs, assuring consumers that the additional charges will be withdrawn once conditions stabilise. AASU has warned of intensified protests if its demands are not addressed.
