AFSPA Withdrawn from Most of Assam, CM Credits Return of Peace

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state has witnessed a major improvement in law and order, with the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) withdrawn from almost all districts since 2022.

He noted that Assam remained fully under AFSPA from 1990 to 2022 due to prolonged violence and insurgency, particularly during the peak of United Liberation Front of Asom activities. According to Sarma, peace initiatives of the “Double Engine Government” helped restore normalcy, allowing a gradual rollback of the Act and marking a new phase of stability in the state.
