AGP Backs ST Status Demand for Six Assam Communities

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has openly supported granting ST status to six major communities—Tai Ahom, Moran, Motok, Chutiya, Koch-Rajbongshi and Tea Tribes—for the first time. After a party meeting in Dibrugarh, MP Birendra Prasad Baishya said the demand is “rightful and long overdue.” AGP leaders will now hold consultations with the communities to push the issue in the Assembly. The move is seen as a major political shift within the ruling alliance ahead of the 2026 elections.
