AGP Reaffirms Full Support for ST Status to Six Assam Communities

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has restated its firm support for granting ST status to six Assam communities, calling it a core commitment, not politics. After extensive talks in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, and Jorhat, party leaders said discussions with groups like the Chutia, Motok, Ahom, Moran, and Tai bodies were positive. Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishya said AGP will keep raising the issue in Parliament and the Assembly. He clarified there were no disagreements from the party’s side during the talks. AGP leaders stressed that elections are not their focus—resolving the ST status demand is. Engagements with Koch-Rajbongshi and Tea Tribe groups will follow.
