AIMIM Chief Owaisi Condemns Assam’s Repeal of Muslim Marriages Act, Alleging Religious Distancing

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the Assam Cabinet’s decision to repeal the Muslim Marriages Act, claiming it aims to distance Muslims from their religious practices. Owaisi expressed concern over the removal of a 90-year-old law that facilitated Muslim marriages through ‘qazi’ or registrars, asserting that the move eliminates the ‘nikahnama’ certificate. He argued that the special marriage act lacks religious provisions and neutralizes the concept of ‘Mehr,’ impacting Muslim women. The Assam Cabinet cited ending child marriage as the motive behind repealing the 1935 Muslim Marriages Act.
