Akhil Gogoi Highlights Assam’s Alarming Debt Crisis

Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi raised concerns over Assam’s rising debt, now at 48% of its Rs 3 lakh crore GSDP. He criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for misrepresenting the state’s economy, noting that while GDP grew to 8.8%, debt surged to unprecedented levels.

Gogoi pointed out Assam’s declining contribution to India’s GDP, dropping from 2.6% in 1960-61 to 1.9% in 2023-24. He also highlighted stagnant per capita income, ranking Assam fifth from the bottom nationally.

He accused the Chief Minister of excessive borrowing, warning of a deepening financial crisis.
