Arrests Made in Gauhati University Marksheet Scam, Investigations Underway

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police has apprehended eight individuals across the state, including Guwahati, Kalgachia, and Dhubri, in connection with a marksheet scam involving Gauhati University. Among those arrested are university employees and individuals linked to colleges in Barpeta and Dhubri. Allegations surfaced after the Postgraduate Students’ Union accused university officials of manipulating marks for monetary gain during answer booklet evaluation and mark updation processes.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concern over the issue, citing manipulation in the computerized marksheet system to inflate student marks for financial incentives. The university’s student union claimed widespread involvement across departments and intermediary networks, with alleged fees ranging from Rs 16,000 to Rs 1 lakh for clearing backlogs and falsifying marks. The scam was uncovered following discrepancies in marks awarded to a student, prompting the CID to initiate investigations into six related cases. CM Sarma pledged continued efforts to root out similar frauds in other universities.
