Assam Assembly Passes Polygamy Ban Bill Amid Heated Debate

The Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 after intense debate and objections from the opposition.

Opposition members argued the bill was unconstitutional, discriminatory, and violated religious freedoms, while the ruling government called it a major step toward women’s empowerment and gender justice.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the bill, saying it applies to all communities and aligns with women-centric policies. Some MLAs questioned exemptions for Sixth Schedule areas, while others warned of legal challenges.

Despite objections over police search powers and concerns of targeting Muslims, the bill was cleared, paving the way for a legal ban on polygamy in the state.
