Assam Becomes First State to Introduce Sign Language in Class XI

Assam has become the first Indian state to introduce Indian Sign Language (ISL) as an elective subject for Class XI from 2025–26. The move aims to promote inclusive education and support students with hearing disabilities. Seventy students have already enrolled under the Assam State School Education Board. The initiative aligns with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and NEP 2020. Experts have welcomed the step and stressed the need for trained teachers and accessible materials.
