Assam Cabinet Approves New Heritage Block Designation to Preserve Cultural Sites

The Assam cabinet has approved an amendment to the state’s land regulation law, introducing “Heritage Blocks” to protect cultural and historical sites. The entire Majuli Island and areas surrounding Barpeta Satra and Bordowa Than will be designated as Heritage Blocks. The new law, added as Chapter 12 in the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation Act, 1886, will restrict land transactions in these areas to residents with at least three generations in the region. Additionally, micro-tribal belts and blocks will be created to protect indigenous communities.
