Assam Chief Minister Stresses Financial Impact, Rejects Old Pension Scheme Demand

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the growing demand for the retention of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) among state government employees, stating that replacing the New Pension Scheme (NPS) with OPS would lead the government to bankruptcy. During the Assam Budget Session’s final day, the OPS-NPS issue was raised in the Legislative Assembly.

CM Sarma emphasized the economic challenges the state would face if pensions continued under the OPS, noting the substantial number of government employees under both OPS and NPS. He highlighted that employees hired during the BJP regime have not protested against the NPS, and even central government employees have not opposed the NPS-OPS transition.
