Assam Chief Minister Unveils Green Transport Initiatives and Infrastructure Upgrades for 2025
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ushered in the New Year with a series of announcements focused on sustainable transportation and infrastructure modernization. He launched 56 new electric buses, expanding the Assam State Transport Corporation’s (ASTC) fleet to 356 buses in Guwahati. Sarma highlighted the state’s commitment to eco-friendly public transport, noting that the fleet would grow to 456 buses in 2025 under the Prime Minister’s E-Bus Sewa scheme.
Sarma also announced plans to phase out diesel buses from city routes and redeploy them to intercity routes, supporting a green corridor in Guwahati. Additionally, he inaugurated a mini-interstate bus terminus at Khanapara, which will feature a food court and medical facilities, and serve travelers to Upper Assam and neighboring states.
The Chief Minister emphasized Assam’s leadership in electric bus deployment, ranking sixth nationwide, and outlined plans for a second ISBT at Jalukbari. He also highlighted the digitization of transport services, which has reduced corruption by 90%, and announced ₹25 crore for the welfare of retired public transport employees.
