Assam Chief Minister Vows to Eradicate Child Marriage, Challenges Opposition in Budget Session

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly condemned Congress and AIUDF, affirming his commitment to preventing child marriages in the state. During the Assam Budget Session, uproar ensued over the cabinet’s decision to revoke the Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935. Sarma firmly declared, “I will not allow the marriages of five-six-year-old girls to take place,” and challenged the opposition by pledging to shut down businesses facilitating child marriage by 2026.
