Assam CM Urges CBI Probe into IIT Student’s Death in West Bengal

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has requested West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to initiate a CBI investigation into the death of Faizan Ahmed, an IIT Kharagpur student from Tinsukia, Assam. Faizan, a third-year mechanical engineering student, was found dead in his hostel room on October 14, 2022. Initially considered a suicide by IIT-Kharagpur authorities, his parents suspected foul play and demanded an investigation.

A recent forensic report suggests Faizan was murdered, showing a gunshot wound and a stab wound. His body was exhumed for a second autopsy by the Calcutta High Court’s order. Sarma has requested Banerjee to hand over the case to the CBI to ensure justice and provide closure to Faizan’s parents. Previously, in October 2022, Sarma had asked Banerjee for a thorough investigation into the student’s unnatural death.
