Assam Commissions 100 New Power Substations in Major Infrastructure Boost
Assam commissioned 100 new distribution substations on Friday to improve power supply and reduce voltage fluctuations. Another 96 substations, funded by a Rs 3,000-crore AIIB-backed project, are expected by December, with project completion slated for March 2026. Over the past three years, 20,000 transformers were installed, alongside 12,000 km of new high-tension lines and 15,000 km of low-tension lines upgraded to insulated cables under the Central government’s RDSS scheme. Power supply interruptions have decreased, and consumption rose by 2,000 million units. However, Assam’s power distribution still faces challenges, including an imbalanced HT to LT line ratio (1:3 vs ideal 1:1.2) and poor LT line conditions, requiring an estimated Rs 30,000 crore for a complete overhaul. AT&C losses stood at 15.4% by March 2025.
