Assam Faces Severe Teacher Shortage in Government Schools

Assam’s Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu revealed on Thursday that three government primary schools have no teachers, while 2,295 schools rely on a single teacher. Additionally, 7,014 schools lack a permanent headmaster, impacting administrative efficiency.

In response to MLA Akhil Gogoi’s query in the State Assembly, Pegu highlighted that 21,961 schools do not have separate classrooms for each grade.

The state faces significant teacher vacancies, including 4,368 science, 5,185 arts, and 1,004 Hindi teacher positions in higher secondary schools. Vacancies also persist in senior secondary and Sixth Schedule district schools.

To address the issue, the government plans to recruit 224 teachers for model schools, including subject specialists and assistant teachers.
