Assam Fish Production Hits Record High, Imports Continue to Meet Demand

Guwahati (Assam): Assam recorded its highest-ever fish production of 5.54 lakh metric tonnes (MT) in 2025–26, up from 5.29 lakh MT in 2024–25, reflecting steady growth over the past six years.
Despite the record output, the state continues to import over 20,000 MT of fish annually from states including Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar to meet consumer demand. According to the Fisheries Department, Assam’s annual fish requirement is estimated at around 6.62 lakh MT, making imports necessary to bridge the supply gap.
