Assam Forms Panel to Implement ULFA Peace Accord, Faces Verification Hurdles

The Assam government has formed a core committee to coordinate with the Centre on implementing the peace accord with the pro-talk ULFA faction. A key challenge has emerged in verifying nearly 2,800 ULFA members reportedly killed during the insurgency, as police records confirm only 93 names. Ex-ULFA leader Anup Chetia said families of all deceased are due Rs 3 lakh each under the pact. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed police to take a liberal approach for verification. The accord also includes a Rs 3,000-crore Central package over five years and plans for a rail coach unit in Bongaigaon.
