Assam Government to Create 35,000 Jobs, Regularize Contractual Teachers

The Assam government announced a plan to create 35,000 new jobs to regularize contractual teachers serving in elementary schools through a special recruitment drive. This decision was made at a State Cabinet meeting in Nalbari on Thursday. Currently employed under the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) contract, these teachers must apply for new positions due to Supreme Court directives preventing direct regularization. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the SSA will cease to exist once the recruitment drive is completed, and the new appointees will receive state government employee benefits.

Additionally, the Cabinet decided to abolish the tax system in weekly and biweekly rural markets, reduce fines for motorbike riders and three-wheelers, and allocate significant funds for water supply plants in Karimganj and Hailakandi. The meeting also approved funding for religious sites, construction of a modern stadium, and the introduction of a science stream at MNC Balika Mahavidyalaya. Flood prevention measures, including the construction of embankments along rivers, were also approved. ‘Operation Blackboard’ teachers in Nalbari will receive Rs 2 lakh each under the Chief Minister’s Special Scheme instead of job regularization.
