Assam Government to Introduce Tribal Languages in Early Education, Recognizes Manipuri in Specific Districts

The Government of Assam has made a significant decision to incorporate six tribal languages as mediums of instruction in the foundational stage of school education. This initiative aims to protect the cultural and linguistic heritage of tribal communities and aligns with the provisions outlined in the National Education Policy, 2020. The decision was reached during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati.

The six tribal languages to be introduced in early education are Mising, Rabha, Karbi, Tiwa, Deori, and Dimasa. This move is seen as a step toward inclusivity and preserving the linguistic diversity of the region.

Additionally, the cabinet has decided to recognize Manipuri as an Associate official language in four specific districts of Assam, namely Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj, and Hojai. This decision acknowledges the linguistic diversity within the state and emphasizes the importance of regional languages in official capacities.
