Assam Govt Launches ‘Shraddhanjali’ Scheme for Dignified Repatriation

The Assam government has launched the “Shraddhanjali” scheme to help bring back bodies of Assamese students and workers who die outside the state. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the initiative will cover those from humble backgrounds but exclude wealthy families and medical travelers. A designated police officer will assist in repatriation, with costs of ₹40,000–₹50,000 borne by the state. Families can apply via WhatsApp, phone, 112, or the Sewa Setu Portal. The scheme follows the recent Ennore SEZ accident, where nine Assamese workers died, with ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each announced.
