Assam Govt Pushes to Curb High Airfares, Boost Connectivity in Barak Valley

Amid rising public anger over soaring airfares on Silchar–Guwahati and Silchar–Kolkata routes, Assam’s Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota announced a government push to cap fares at Rs 6,000–6,500, following a meeting between CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and IndiGo’s chairman. IndiGo has agreed to lower prices by July 15 and add more flights to Silchar, Jorhat, and Lakhimpur. Efforts are underway to restore the suspended Air India Silchar–Kolkata flight. The proposed Greenfield Airport at Doloo is now part of the National Infrastructure Pipeline. Additionally, construction of a high-speed corridor between Guwahati and Silchar will start by November to improve regional connectivity. A DPR for a new rail link via Lanka awaits Indian Railways’ approval. The government reaffirmed its commitment to improving Barak Valley’s transport and infrastructure.
