Assam Govt Tables UCC Bill in Assembly Amid Opposition Protest

The Assam government on Monday introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assembly. The proposed law seeks to ban polygamy, regulate marriage and succession laws, and make registration of live-in relationships compulsory.

The Bill, introduced on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, will not apply to Scheduled Tribes in Assam. It also sets the legal marriage age at 21 for men and 18 for women.

Opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, Raijor Dal, and All India Trinamool Congress, opposed the move and demanded wider public consultation before the Bill was tabled.

During the Assembly discussion, MLA Akhil Gogoi raised concerns over inflation and rising living costs, while Independent MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed highlighted issues related to healthcare, teacher appointments, and Brahmaputra erosion.
